You know the old, “if you were stranded on a desert island, what five foods would you bring to eat” hypothetical? This homemade guacamole makes the list.
There is no better way to enjoy avocados than in homemade guacamole! It’s rich yet fresh, bright, tangy, salty, and creamy. It can be thrown together in less than 20 minutes with just a handful of ingredients, is naturally gluten-free and vegan, and always wildly popular at any party. In short, everyone needs this back-pocket snack, appetizer, indispensable classic.
These days, avocados and guacamole are practically a global obsession. The once difficult-to-source fruit is becoming more and more widespread, and avocado aficionados can happily enjoy avocados all year round. While avocado toast may have certainly had its moment, guacamole is far and away the best thing to make with a few ripe avocados.
Finding the perfectly ripe avocado is nothing short of an art form, because the window of ideal ripeness is infuriatingly short. The easiest way to determine if an avocado is ripe is to gently squeeze the fruit in the palm of your hand. Ripe and ready avocados will yield to gentle pressure. Another trick is to lightly press down on the stem; if it gives just a little, your avocado is ripe; but if the stem sinks in too far, the avocado may be past its prime.
A great Guacamole teeters a fine line between refreshing and rich, offering up a tangy mellowness that takes the edge off of a face-meltingly spicy taco, while simultaneously being able to add cool creamy body to anything from a tortilla chip to a tostada. This balance is kept in check by the contrast of the rich avocado and a tart hit of lime. Aside from that, all you need is a little onion and cilantro adding adding a pungent herbaceous flavor that keeps your taste-buds from getting bored.
Guacamole. A pillar of Mexican food, a bite of paradise, the glue that holds together the perfect meal. Nothing is more inviting and satisfying to dip a crunchy, salty tortilla chip into than guacamole.
